Marlin picks two PSL keepers that deserve a chance at Bafana

Former Bafana Bafana goalkeeper Calvin Marlin has named two PSL keepers whom he believes deserve a call-up to the national team.

Marlin, now retired, earned 12 caps with the 1996 African champions, managing to keep two clean sheets and conceding 14 goals.

For the most part of his tenure with Bafana, Hugo Broos has consistently selected Mamelodi Sundowns star Ronwen Williams, SuperSport United’s Ricardo Goss, and AmaZulu FC’s Veli Mothwa as his preferred goalkeepers for the national team.

Ahead of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan in September, Orlando Pirates goalkeeper Sipho Chaine received his first call-up while Williams was recovering from an injury. Chaine made his debut in a 3-2 victory against South Sudan.

Now, in back-to-back AFCON qualifiers against Congo, Broos selected Williams, Goss and Chaine. Mothwa was dropped after inconsistent performances for both club and national team.

The former Sundowns and SuperSport United shot-stopper says Darren Keet of Cape Town City FC and Sage Stephens of Stellenbosch FC deserve a chance to play in the national team.

Keet was a member of the national team from 2013 to 2020 but eventually lost his place. He made 13 appearances for Bafana Bafana, conceding 14 goals and keeping four clean sheets. This season, the 35-year-old has played six games in all competitions for Cape Town City, conceding seven goals and keeping two clean sheets.

Stephens has been in excellent form for Stellenbosch FC this season. The 33-year-old has played 10 games in all competitions, conceding seven goals and keeping six clean sheets. Stephens played a key role in leading Stellies to the MTN8 final, although they ultimately lost 3-1 to Orlando Pirates.

“In my opinion Darren [Keet] and [Sage] Stephens deserve a chance to play in the national team,” Marlin told FARPost.

“Keet has been performing well for Cape Town City and as for Stephens we have seen what he has been doing for Stellenbosch. They just have to keep on working hard then they will get their opportunity.”
