DDC wrap: Stellenbosch ascend to summit as Chiefs drop points

The reigning champions, Stellenbosch FC, ascended to the top of the league standings after Kaizer Chiefs dropped points in the DStv Diski Challenge at the weekend.

Amakhosi now sit in second position after a 2-2 draw against Richards Bay at the Sugar Ray Xulu Stadium on Sunday afternoon.

Meanwhile, Stellies had secured a commanding 5-1 victory over Bernard Parker’s TS Galaxy on Saturday. Langelihle Phili delivered an outstanding performance, securing a hat-trick in what was the opening match of the festival in Clermont. Quwan Plaatjies and Keenan Johannesen scored the other two goals for Stellies.

Both Chiefs and the Cape Winelands side have now garnered a total of 14 points following seven matches played this season.

In one of the matches that took place on Sunday, Cape Town City returned to form with an impressive 5-2 triumph against Polokwane City.

SuperSport United achieved a 3-2 victory over AmaZulu, marking the latter’s second consecutive defeat following their loss to Mamelodi Sundowns last week.

PIRATES BOUNCED BACK TO WINNING WAYS

Yesterday, Orlando Pirates bounced back to winning ways after securing maximum points with a slender 1-0 victory over Lamontville Golden Arrows.

Siphamandla Msezane maintained his outstanding form this season, scoring the only goal for Ezimnyama Ngenkani, which secured their third victory of the campaign.

Joseph Makhanya’s troops came to this match this match having suffered one defeat and played one draw in their previous two games. Following all the games at the weekend, they are presently positioned in fourth place, having accumulated 12 points from seven matches.

Mamelodi Sundowns were not in action this weekend as their opponents Royal AM had their participation halted by PSL due to their shortage of squad resulting from the FIFA transfer ban.
