Bafana coach Hugo Broos makes plea to SAFA

Bafana Bafana coach Hugo Broos has sounded the alarm, expressing deep concern about a critical issue that could have a significant impact on the national team’s performance.

Broos comments came a day after his troops’ convincing win against Congo Brazzaville in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium.

South Africa put in a good show to hammer Congo 5-0.  The 2023 AFCON semi-finalists found the back through Bathusi Aubaas, Lyle Foster, Iqraam Rayners, and Teboho Mokoena. The latter scored a brace.

Bafana’s win over the Red Devils meant that they are now just three points away from sealing a spot in the 2025 AFCON finals in Morocco.

But Broos was not pleased as the match between Bafana Bafana and Congo had to be stopped for over 10 minutes after spectators invaded the pitch.

BROOS TELL SAFA TO PRIORITISE SAFETY IN BAFANA BAFANA GAMES

Hugo Broos has sent a message to SAFA to prioritise a high level of security when choosing the venue for Bafana games.

“I was very happy to see the crowd when I came in [to the stadium], and I was not happy after 20 minutes because we could have stopped the game, and that was going to be a disaster,” Broos said.

“So, I think in the future, and it’s not up to us as coaches, I have to ask SAFA that when they choose the stadium, they must be sure of its security.

“I don’t understand that before the break, for example, there were 10 securities, then after the break, suddenly they were 50. Where were they from the beginning of the game?

“We are playing a very important game and now we should have problems because of kids with their happiness and they run onto the field.

“Nobody did something about this. There was no security running behind those guys, so this is something we need to take into account for the next games.

“I was always asking to have the crowd and it happened, maybe next time it will be better not to have the crowd. If we want the crowd, we have to prepare for that, such things can happen and security has to be there.”

Bafana and Congo will clash again on Tuesday, October 15th, at the Alphonse Massamba-Debat Stadium in Brazzaville.
