Should SA shutter its doors to foreign goalkeepers? Bvuma’s take

Kaizer Chiefs goalkeeper Bruce Bvuma has weighed in on the debate surrounding the suggestions to ban the signing of foreign goalkeepers in South Africa.

The discussion stemmed from the comments that were recently made by SuperSport United goalkeeper Ricardo Goss, advocating for a ban on the recruitment of goalkeepers from abroad in order to create more opportunities for local talent.

This measure is used by Egypt which many believe has yielded positive results, as their national teams do not often appear to be struggling in the goalkeeping departments.

Bvuma holds a different perspective. He expressed that if foreigners are good enough and can contribute effectively to their clubs, there is no justification for denying them the chance to play.

BVUMA – ‘I DON’T HAVE A PROBLEM WITH FOREIGN GOALKEEPERS’

“I don’t think we must go the Egyptian or is it the North African route? For me, if the goalkeeper is good enough let him come, let him be a first choice,” said Bvuma.

“Like, I will make an example, your Denis Onyango, I think I saw one interview of Ricardo [Goss]. He [Denis Onyango] is solid, he has been solid for the teams that he played for.

“For me, I don’t have a problem with foreign goalkeepers coming and playing. As long as when they’re playing they’re doing well.”

Bvuma is currently serving as an understudy to the Burundian ‘keeper Fiacre Ntwari who signed for Amakhosi ahead of this season.

The Leratong-born emphasised that Ntwari is not the cause of his lack of opportunities to represent the national team. He believes it is his responsibility to improve his performance and enhance his chances.

BVUMA ON NTWARI’S ARRIVAL

“It’s all entirely up to me if I make the team or not,” he added. “It has nothing to do with the foreign goalkeeper that’s playing in our team.

“So, for me, I have to do my hard work so that when I get my chance, I’ll be back and be in the national team again.”
