Is Yusuf Maart the right man to captain Chiefs? Ex-defender weighs in

A former Kaizer Chiefs defender has shared his thoughts on whether Yusuf Maart is the right man to lead the Soweto giants, with newly signed Inacio Miguel showing signs of leadership.

Maart was given the captain’s armband ahead of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership by new coach Nasreddine Nabi.

This follows the removal of Itumeleng Khune from the role due to disciplinary reasons last season.

In the past, Khune, whose contract at Chiefs expired at the end of last season, was a long-standing captain of the club, but his captaincy was revoked last season after he arrived at training under the influence of alcohol. After that, Maart, Brandon Petersen, Given Msimango, and Keagan Dolly shared the captaincy responsibilities.

Maart, who previously held the captaincy position at Sekhukhune United, has demonstrated strong leadership qualities. Under his leadership, Chiefs have played three league matches, winning two and losing one.

However, in a recent Cufa Cup match against Marumo Gallants on Sunday in Bloemfontein, Chiefs’ new arrival, Inacio Miguel, wore the captain’s armband for the entire game, including the penalty shootout. Maart, who came on as a substitute, only took over the captaincy during the trophy presentation.

WHAT MORGAN GOULD SAID ABOUT YUSUF MAART AS CHIEFS CAPTAIN

Gould spent three seasons at the Naturena-based side [2012/13 up to 2015/16]. During that time, Gould used to captain the Glamour Boys in some matches due to his leadership qualities.

The former defender says Maart is currently a better leader at Chiefs and has been at the club for quite some time – three years.

“People will always have their opinions. For me, he’s a better leader right now, but I won’t say the best leader, and he’s been in the team for some time,” Gould told FARPost.

“I’m sure there is something the coach saw; that’s why he’s the captain. Gone are the days whereby captains are only hard workers and winners of the game. Maybe he’s leading in another way.

“When it comes to the captaincy, it goes down to three elements. The players, the technical team and the supporters.

“Maart is the best when it comes to his work ethic. He pushes, he fights, although sometimes there is a feeling that he’s not the right one.”
