‘Most underrated footballer in the country’: Barker on Stellenbosch attacker

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has heaped praise on one of his side’s attackers, whom he feels is unsung despite his significant contributions to the team’s success.

Barker was speaking after the Cape Winelands side secured a 2-1 victory over AmaZulu FC in the Carling Knockout Cup Round of 16 clash that was held at the King Zwelithini Stadium.

In their quest to defend their title, Stellies became the first team to secure a spot in the quarterfinals and will find out their next opponents on Sunday.

Barker, pleased with his players’ performance on the day, specifically hailed Andre de Jong, who netted the decisive goal for Stellies.

He noted that the 27-year-old has played a crucial role in the team’s achievements over the past 18 months, yet not much is said about him.

BARKER FEELS NOT MUCH IS SAID ABOUT ‘SMART’ DE JONG

“I think he is, in my opinion, one of the most underrated footballers in the country,” said Barker.

“Just like you say, simplicity at its best. He’s got a good first touch, controls the ball, and links plays for us from defence to attack.

“He’s a smart footballer, he’s aerially good for us and in scoring goals, he’s become a key player for us.”

Further, Barker is hopeful that de Jong will be recalled to the New Zealand national team, citing his consistent form over a prolonged period.

“I’m also hoping that he gets himself back into the New Zealand national team. I think he deserves it, he’s shown consistency in the last 18 months.

“He’s a valuable asset, I like him because he’s smart, he’s a smart footballer and tactically very disciplined. Hopefully that can continue.”

De Jong has had a bright start to the 2024/25 season, scoring five goals and registering two assists in 12 matches he has played for Stellenbosch in all competitions.
