In a stunning upset at Orlando Stadium, the less-fancied Magesi FC sent Orlando Pirates packing in the round of 16 of the Carling Knockout Cup.
The thrilling 3-2 victory in Soweto on Saturday afternoon secured Magesi’s place in the tournament’s quarter-finals.
The Limpopo club came into this showdown as underdogs, but they showed that a cup game is a different ball game.

Magesi put an end to Jose Riveiro‘s series of wins in local cup matches. The Spanish coach aimed to be the first mentor in the Buccaneers’ PSL history to win eight cup matches in a row.
Nevertheless, Dikwena tsa Meetse had different intentions on the day. They defeated them decisively on their home ground, a feat that many teams failed to accomplish.

Clinton Larsen’s boys made their debut in the Carling Knockout tournament, becoming the 49th different club to participate in the competition in the PSL era.

THABISO SASANE HAVING A BAD AT THE OFFICE
Pirates defender Thabiso Sasane had a terrible day at work, as Magesi players pressured him on the field, resulting in mistakes that led to goals.
Sasane accidentally scored a goal for the opposing team in the 39th minute of the match as Larsen’s team aggressively attacked the Sea Robbers.
Sasane’s situation worsened when he awarded Magesi a penalty during stoppage time of the interval, which Betway Premiership newcomers took advantage of.

Three goals scored in the opening half of the match paved the way for Magesi to secure a stunning 3-2 victory on the road.
Delano Abrahams scored in the 33rd minute, Thabiso Sasane’s own goal was in the 39th minute, and Edmore Chirambadare’s goal just before halftime.
Kabelo Dlamini and Evidence Makgopa scored for Pirates in the 86th and 89th minutes, respectively.
