Gaston Sirino highlights Nabi’s game-changer at Chiefs

Kaizer Chiefs star midfielder Gaston Sirino has highlighted coach Nasreddine Nabi’s game-changer after a resurgent start to the season.

Sirino, a key acquisition from Mamelodi Sundowns during the off-season, has been instrumental in Amakhosi’s recent success.

His move to Naturena followed a challenging stint at Sundowns, where he was consistently overlooked by coach Rulani Mokwena. Since joining Amakhosi, the Uruguayan has showcased his exceptional talent, contributing two goals and three assists in a relatively short time.

He was speaking after Chiefs’ resounding 4-0 victory over SuperSport United in the round of 16 of the Carling Knockout Cup on Saturday night in Polokwane. Sirino, who scored the opener, expressed his satisfaction with the team’s performance and emphasised the importance of maintaining a winning mentality under Nabi.

“It was a very difficult game, the first 30 minutes so difficult but we needed to push as a team,” Sirino told SuperSport TV after the match. “We need to push. Kaizer Chiefs is a big club; we need to win every game.”

Sirino acknowledged the immense responsibility that comes with playing for a club like the Soweto giants but expressed his unwavering commitment to helping the team achieve success.

“It’s a big responsibility to play for Kaizer Chiefs, but I’m very happy here to help the team,” he said. “I’m here to help the team also but I think also the change of mentality is important for us. To win every game. I think also, in the last game against [Mamelodi] Sundowns, we needed to score a little bit more goals. It’s good. Now, we need a little bit of recovery. We have another difficult game against SuperSport.”

The 33-year-old joins Wandile Duba and Yusuf Maart in highlighting the positive shift in mentality at the club under Nabi.

Amakhosi have another date with Matsatsantsa at the Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. This time, they meet in a Betway Premiership tie.

Saturday’s victory over SuperSport was a significant boost for Chiefs, who have been aiming to regain their former glory. They have not won a trophy in the last nine years, and the club has placed all hope on Nabi to turn their fortunes around.
