‘Give me the chequebook I’ll show you how to win the league’ – Gavin Hunt

SuperSport United head coach Gavin Hunt expressed concerns about the club’s inability to compete in the transfer market, arguing that he could win the league if given the chequebook to sign players.

The experienced mentor made these remarks after his side lost 2-0 to Orlando Pirates in the Betway Premiership at Orlando Stadium on Tuesday night.

Before losing against Pirates, SuperSport suffered a heavy 4-0 defeat against Kaizer Chiefs in the Carling Knockout Cup Last 16 this past weekend in Polokwane.

Matsatsantsa have been working on a limited budget after the Covid-19 pandemic which has resulted wiith the club failing sign quality players. The lack of sponsors also makes it difficult for the club to attract top players.

SuperSport have also lost their key players to Kaizer Chiefs, Orlando Pirates, and Mamelodi Sundowns in recent years.

In the past few seasons, the Spartans lost players such Patrick Maswanganyi, Thapelo Maseko, Thalente Mbatha, Kegan Johannes, Selaelo Rasebotja, Thatayaone Ditlhokwe, Teboho Mokoena, Sipho Mbule, Grant Kekana, Aubrey Modiba and Ronwen Williams to the big three.

Meanwhile, SuperSport have been heavily relying on free agents to beef up their squad or players on loan. They recently signed Tashreeq Morris who parted ways with Sekhukhune United at the end of the last season.

Hunt, who has won three successive league titles between 2008 and 2010 with SuperSport in his first stint at the club, says he would win the league if he’s given an open chequebook to sign players.

“It’s very difficult when the exit door [for players is open]; it is what it is. I mean, they [management] explained to me when I came back three years ago that they haven’t been in the top four in the 10 years that I wasn’t here,” Hunt said.

“The season before last, we came third on the log, and last season, we finished seventh by one point from fourth to go back in Africa [CAF Interclub competitions] after having to travel like we did, playing all the kids from DStv Diski Challenge – DDC. So we suffered, but hey, give me the chequebook, and I’ll show you how to win the league.”
