‘I hope they have depth’: Mngqithi on Pirates title threat
While acknowledging the threat Orlando Pirates could pose this season, Mamelodi Sundowns head coach Manqoba Mngqithi has identified potential weaknesses that could hinder the Buccaneers.
Both teams have enjoyed a flawless start to the Betway Premiership season, each securing victories in their first four matches.
Masandawana have been a dominant force in the league, winning it seven times in a row. In the previous two seasons, Ezimnyama Ngenkani finished as runners up.
Pirates’ bright start to this season indicates their intention to compete vigorously with the Tshwane giants for the league title.
Mngqithi seemingly questioned squad depth for the Sea Robbers, particularly as they are also taking part in the CAF Champions League.
He noted that the Soweto giants struggled against Magesi FC in the Carling Knockout Cup over the weekend after making a few changes to their lineup.
Furthermore, the Sundowns coach pointed out that Pirates often encounter challenges when facing so-called smaller teams, which can disrupt their league momentum.
MANQOBA MNGQITHI ON WHAT HE THINKS ABOUT ORLANDO PIRATES CHALLENGE THIS SEASON
“I think I said it from the beginning in the launch that for me they are the team that’s going to be really pushing us,” said Mngqithi.
“I hope and pray they do have the depth to carry themselves during the group stages and the league because I think that’s where the separation will take place because I do believe they are a very good team.
“They tried to rotate the squad, unfortunately it did not work out very well in the Carling. But honestly speaking I think they are a team that will really pose a lot of problems.
“But I still maintain that they are a team that doesn’t do well against small teams. So far, they have really done well but let’s continue and see because that’s where I think maybe the championship will be decided.”
