Yanga’s Hersi honoured, aims for African glory

Hersi Ally Said, the visionary leader behind the resurgence of Young Africans [Yanga], has been honoured with the Award for Excellence in Football Development at the Nigeria-France Sports Gala.

This prestigious accolade recognises his exceptional contributions to the growth and success of Tanzanian football.

Said’s journey to transforming Yanga began in 2020 when he spearheaded a committee helping the club through turbulent times. Following a change in the club’s constitution, Said was elected Yanga’s first president in 2022.

At the time, Yanga was struggling financially and was being overshadowed by their rival, Simba SC. Under Said’s leadership, however, the club underwent a remarkable transformation.

Since his involvement with the club, Yanga has enjoyed unprecedented success. They have clinched three consecutive league titles and two FA Cup titles, dominating Tanzanian football.

Moreover, the club has made significant strides on the continental stage, reaching the final of the 2022 CAF Confederation Cup and the 2023 CAF Champions League quarter-finals. Currently, they are participating in the group stages of Africa’s premier club competition.

Upon receiving the award, Said expressed gratitude and shared his ambitious goals for Tanzanian football. “I’m honoured to receive the Award for Excellence in Football Development from the Nigeria-France Sports Gala,” he told FARPost.

“This recognition is not just a personal achievement but a reflection of the hard work and passion of everyone involved in growing African football. It’s a reminder that our efforts to elevate the sport are being recognised globally, motivating us to push even further.

“I’d like to thank the Ambassador of Tanzania in France for accepting this award on my behalf. I dedicate it to all those who believe in the future of African football.”

However, a cherished dream of his, a promise he made to the Yanga faithful, still lives on.

“And I pray INSHALLAH I want to bring the first African trophy to Tanzania. This is my intention, and I’m praying I will also put effort into achieving this under my leadership,” he has said previously.

Said’s unwavering commitment to developing Tanzanian football has been instrumental in Yanga’s success. Elected chairman of the African Clubs Association [ACA], his leadership has revitalised the club and inspired a new generation of football fans and players in Tanzania.

As Yanga continues to excel on domestic and international fronts, Said’s legacy as a visionary leader is poised to endure for years.
