Promise Mkhuma resurfaces at PSL club
Following Promise Mkhuma’s exit from Mamelodi Sundowns before the start of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season, the attacker has resurfaced at a PSL club.
The 24-year-old midfielder has been a free agent for four months after Sundowns decided against renewing his contract at the end of June 2024.
In the past few years, Mkhuma has struggled to break into the Sundowns team, which saw him going out on loan at different teams.
Last season, Mkhuma spent a season-long loan in the Motsepe Foundation Championship with AmaTuks to find regular game-time.
During his stint at Tuks, Mkhuma struggled to establish himself as a regular starter after only playing 11 matches with zero goal contributions. The former SA junior international was promoted from Sundowns’ DStv Diski Challenge [DDC] side to the senior by the then-head coach Pitso Mosimane in 2019.
PROMISE MKHUMA ISSUES UPDATE ON HIS FUTURE
Mkhuma, who featured in 23 matches across all competitions for Downs, has revealed that he’s training with Upington City FC, and he’s hoping to get a contract.
“I got a call from Upington, I think, a week ago, and I feel positive about everything since I’m back on the field. I’m on trial at Upington City, and it’s promising,” Mkhuma said on Metro FM.
“The team is positive about me because last week I was training twice a day, and this week I started playing; I played 60 minutes [in a friendly match]. I’ve been training with a personal trainer; it’s not like I was sitting and doing nothing.”
Meanwhile, Bafana Ba Gucci have had a good start to the 2024/25 season as they push for promotion to the SA’s top-flight. Upington are sitting third on the league table with 14 points after winning four games, drawing two and losing on two occasions in eight matches.
Interestingly, former Mkhuma’s teammate Keletso Makgalwa revived his career at Upington last season. Makgalwa joined the Northern Cape-based side in October 2023 and went on to score 11 goals in 23 matches. The pacey winger has since signed with Sekhukhune United in the elite league after impressing at City.
