Shaune Mogaila makes first court appearance, granted R20k bail
Sekhukhune United winger Shaune Mogaila has been granted bail of R20 000 following his first court appearance on Friday.
Mogaila appeared in the Tembisa Magistrate’s Court in Ekurhuleni, facing serious charges in connection with a devastating car accident on Wednesday morning.
The 29-year-old has been charged with culpable homicide, reckless and negligent driving and fleeing the scene. This comes after he turned himself in at the Rabie Ridge Police Station on Wednesday afternoon.
The horrific head-on collision occurred on Andrew Mapheto Road in Tembisa at approximately 7:30 AM. Mogaila’s BMW M2 collided with a red Hyundai Grand i10.
Tragically, a nine-year-old girl lost her life in the accident. Her mother and a 13-year-old neighbour sustained serious injuries and remained hospitalised. On the other hand, the former Royal AM attacker, Mogaila, only sustained a head injury, visible as a bruise on his forehead.
In Mogaila’s car, authorities found four bottles of “potent alcohol named Don Julio,” suspected cocaine, and cannabis edibles.
MOGAILA GRANTED R20K BAIL, CASE POSTPONED TO 2025 FEBRUARY
The state did not oppose Mogaila’s release, and he was granted R20 000 bail with no specific conditions. The case was postponed to 4 February 2025 to allow for further investigations, including the analysis of post-mortem results and video footage related to the incident.
During Friday’s court proceedings, the magistrate cautioned Mogaila that he will be released from custody but must appear in person before court number two at 8:30 AM [on 4 February, – Tuesday] and stay there until the court permits him to leave.
“There are consequences for such failure to appear in court,” the presiding officer said. “Note that when you fail to comply with the order that the court has made, your bail may be provisionally declared cancelled, the money will be provisionally forfeited to the state, and the court may issue a warrant of arrest.
“If you still do not appear, that can lead to the final forfeiture of your bail money,” she ruled.
Mogaila was in action for his club during a Betway Premiership match against Richards Bay FC, a day before the accident. His club released a statement on Thursday, expressing their deepest condolences to the family of the deceased and said that they would not comment further as the matter is currently before the courts.
