Itumeleng Khune: ‘I own Topbet, not just an Ambassador’

As the curtains begin to close on Itumeleng Khune’s illustrious soccer career, the legendary goalkeeper is embarking on a new chapter as the owner of South Africa’s betting company, Topbet.

Khune, whose contract with Kaizer Chiefs expired in June, has transitioned from the football field to the boardroom, taking on a significant role in shaping the future of Topbet. The company recently announced a strategic partnership with the former Bafana Bafana captain, highlighting his involvement in the business.

“Topbet proudly announces its partnership with soccer icon Itumeleng Khune. Known for his commitment, resilience, and leadership, Khune will be at the forefront of Topbet’s initiatives to deliver a world-class betting experience while empowering communities across the country,” read the statement.

“To celebrate this partnership, Topbet has simultaneously unveiled a new brand identity featuring a brand-new website and logo, featuring Khune’s iconic image as a symbol of his unique style and dedication.”

Contrary to popular belief, Khune’s association with Topbet extends far beyond a mere brand ambassadorship. He is a substantial shareholder in the company, actively contributing to its strategic direction and operations.

WHAT ITUMELENG KHUNE SAID ABOUT HIS TOPBET ROLE

“I must emphasise that I’m not a brand ambassador for Topbet, but I’m the owner,” Khune told the media. “I’m excited to make a difference in our communities.”

Khune’s venture into business ownership sets a precedent for athletes. The move also demonstrates that there are lucrative opportunities beyond the sporting arena. He aims to inspire fellow footballers and other sports personalities to explore diverse avenues and venture into entrepreneurship.

“We need to start teaching footballers and all other businessmen and women out there that there are bigger opportunities out there,” Khune stated. “When you meet the right people, you sit down and have a talk around the boardroom table, and you realise there are bigger opportunities to get involved in.”

The Ventersdorp-born football icon, renowned for his exceptional goalkeeping skills and charismatic personality, is convinced he is making significant strides in the business world.

‘Itu’ represented Bafana Bafana in the 2010 FIFA World Cup. He also holds the second-highest number of national team caps, trailing only Aaron Mokoena.

During his time at Chiefs, he amassed an impressive trophy haul. These include multiple league titles and individual accolades, such as the PSL Footballer of the Season award. Last season, Khune achieved a remarkable milestone of 25 years of unbroken service at Chiefs.

His famous ‘Distribution 101’ and shot-stopping abilities solidified his status as one of the most recognisable figures in African football.

His new venture marks an exciting chapter in his career. This demonstrates the Amakhosi and Bafana legend’s versatility and entrepreneurial spirit.
