Kaizer Chiefs’ stance on Bongani Zungu
Speculation has been rife regarding a potential move for former Mamelodi Sundowns star Bongani Zungu to Kaizer Chiefs, but what is Amakhosi’s stance on the midfielder?
Zungu, who is currently a free agent, recently underwent a trial at Wydad Casablanca in Morocco. Despite being coached by former Sundowns mentor Rulani Mokwena, a move to the Moroccan giants did not materialise.
Fitness concerns stemming from a lack of competitive football since May 2024 were reportedly cited as the primary reason for the failed trial.
While Zungu has been linked to a few clubs, including Chiefs, it appears Amakhosi have no intention of signing the veteran midfielder. The club’s coaching staff reportedly has other priorities and does not view Zungu as a suitable addition to their squad.
FARPost’s findings definitively prove that there have been no negotiations between Chiefs and Zungu.
Njabulo Blom, Samkelo Zwane and Sibongiseni Mthethwa are the current defensive midfielders at Chiefs. Blom rejoined the Soweto giants on loan from MLS side St Louis City SC. Mthethwa is yet to start a game under coach Nasreddine Nabi, but continues to fight for his place.
WHICH OTHER LEAGUES HAS BONGANI ZUNGU BEEN LINKED WITH
Zungu’s future remains uncertain several months after his departure from Sundowns. The midfielder’s unexpected announcement last season, which coincided with tensions between then-coach Rulani Mokwena and sporting director Flemming Berg, raised questions about his next steps.
Zungu, who rejoined Sundowns in 2022 after a six-year stint in Europe with clubs such as Vitória Guimarães in Portugal, Amiens SC in France, and Scottish giants Rangers, has struggled to find a new club despite his experience and international background.
Recent reports indicate that Zungu has also been in discussions with clubs in the Gulf region, but no concrete deal has been finalised. As the season progresses, the South African midfielder is still awaiting his next opportunity.
