Billiat faces the most decisive moment of his first season in Zim

As Zimbabwe’s PSL curtain goes down, former Kaizer Chiefs star Khama Billiat faces a decisive moment to cap his career revival.

Billiat returned to Zimbabwe after failing to secure a new club in the SA elite league when he parted ways with Amakhosi in 2023.

His return home was met with great excitement, as he instantly became the highest-paid player in the league. More importantly, he breathed life into Yadah FC, a team that has been fighting relegation since their promotion to Zim top-flight in 2016.

Yadah are not entirely safe from relegation but Billiat’s individual brilliance has told a different tale.

According to Yadah FC owner Prophet Walter Magaya, Billiat’s jersey sales broke records in Zimbabwe. Magaya said the sales generated a staggering R2.1 million for the club.

The remarkable figures reflect the impact of the former Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs star’s appeal. He has excelled on and off the field.

And as the 2024 Zimbabwe PSL season draws near the end, the 34-year-old is faced with a decisive moment. His contract ends in December.

At the same time, he is one of the favourites to win the Player of the Season award, with the voting panel set to convene in a fortnight.

One game remains before the season wraps up, with Billiat sitting on 12 goals, three goals behind the leading scorer, Lynoth Chikuhwa.

With such impressive statistics, Billiat has a chance to win the Player of the Season award, which he won in South Africa while at Sundowns.

In the 2015/16 season, the Harare-born star was in scintillating form, as he accounted for the Footballer of the Season award in SA.

If he wins it, he will become the second player to win it both in South Africa and Zimbabwe. Wilfred Mugeyi is the only former PSL star to have won the award in South Africa and Zimbabwe.

This award has been won by several former PSL stars, including Peter Ndlovu, Rodwell Chinyengetere, Walter Musona, and Danny Phiri.

Furthermore, this term, Billiat faces stiff competition from Walter Musona, who captained Simba Bhora FC to the 2024 league title victory.

Musona has ten goals under his belt, with 13 assists in 32 league match appearances for Simba Bhora FC.

Even if he fails to garner enough votes from the Soccer Stars selection panel for the big gong, he is assured to be among the season’s best eleven.
