Wydad issues scathing statement on alleged racial abuse of Rulani Mokwena

Wydad Casablanca have issued a scathing statement after coach Rulani Mokwena was allegedly subjected to racial abuse. The incident occurred during the Botola league match against Ittihad Tanger.

The Moroccan giants have condemned the incident in the strongest possible terms. They called on relevant authorities to investigate the matter thoroughly. Wydad want authorities to take appropriate measures to prevent such incidents from recurring.

Mokwena’s men, currently fifth in the league standings after 10 games, fought back to secure a point but still trail leaders RS Berkane by five points.

In a statement, Wydad reaffirmed their commitment to eradicating racism from the game. Mokwena claimed that he was subjected to a racial slur during a heated confrontation with an Ittihad Tanger official.

In addition, reports suggest the Ittihad Tanger official may have used the derogatory “K-word” against the ex-Mamelodi Sundowns and Orlando Pirates coach. This deeply offensive term, historically rooted in racial discrimination, has sparked widespread condemnation.

“What makes me very upset and disappointed is that I was subjected to some racist comments by the opposition,” said Mokwena. The 37-year-old expressed his frustration over the incident. “I don’t like that and don’t think I deserve that. I don’t think I came to Morocco to be racially abused. It’s not right.”

Meanwhile, Wydad also expressed disappointment with Tanger’s attempt to shift the focus away from the racist incident. The former CAF Champions League winners urged Tanger to address the issue directly.

“Wydad strongly condemns the unfortunate events that followed the final whistle of the match between our team and Ittihad Tanger,” reads the club’s statement.

“Our coach, Mr Mokwena, was subjected to unacceptable racist remarks from a member of Ittihad Tanger’s staff who was not on the field during the match. However, he entered after its conclusion. His abusive and racist words towards the coach led to some altercations between the players.

WYDAD URGES AUTHORITIES TO ADDRESS RACIAL ABUSE

“Wydad Athletic Club also denounces Ittihad Tanger’s attempt to divert attention from this racist behaviour by directing public opinion towards other matters and ignoring the core issue. This is unethical conduct by one of its members.

“We consider these attempts as an evasion of responsibility and incompatible with the sporting values that should unite clubs in fair competition. In this context, we emphasise that Wydad Athletic Club welcomed the Ittihad Tanger team and its officials in an exceptional manner. We responded to all their requests with respect and generosity in an unprecedented way.

“Morocco has always been and will remain a land of hospitality and brotherhood. This is a country where people come together in a spirit of respect and coexistence. These are values that have formed the source of strength and identity of our country throughout history. Such racist behaviour has no place in our country or in our stadiums. We are committed to preserving the spirit of fair and honest competition.

“While we strongly reject these actions, we call on the relevant authorities to take the necessary measures. This will ensure the protection of the integrity of our sport from anything that tarnishes it.”
