Hugo Broos explains what makes Titus a perfect replacement for Mayambela
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has explained what makes Stellenbosch FC attacker Devin Titus a perfect replacement for Mihlali Mayambela.
The highly-rated midfielder, Titus, has been called-up to replace Mayambela, who suffered an injury while in action for his club Aris Limassol in Cyprus this past weekend.
Titus teamed up with his Bafana teammates on Monday, 11 November 2024, to prepare for two crucial 2025 AFCON qualifiers against Uganda and South Sudan.
South Africa will lock horns with Uganda on the 15th of November before facing South Sudan at the DHL Stadium in Cape Town on the 19th of November.
Titus is the third Stellenbosch player in the Bafana squad following the call-ups to goalkeeper Sage Stephens and left-back Fawaaz Basadien. The 23-year-old has been a key player for Stellies after scoring three goals and providing two assists in 17 matches across all competitions since the start of the 2024/25 season.
WHAT DID HUGO BROOS SAY ABOUT DEVIN TITUS REPLACING MIHLALI MAYAMBELA IN THE BAFANA SQUAD?
Hugo Broos says there is no better replacement than Titus for Mayambela, considering his consistent performances for the Maroons.
“I think when you see the performances from Devin with Mayambela injured, I don’t see any player who can replace him. He’s having a strong season, he scores, he’s very quick, and he can dribble defenders,” Broos said.
“So yeah, I think we can’t say anything bad about the choice to select Titus, and I hope when I need him, he will help us, but I’m sure he will because he has a certain talent, and that is eliminating players and scoring.”
In the previous campaign, Titus was key for Stellenbosch when they finished third on the Betway Premiership log table. The Steve Barker-coached team also won the inaugural Carling Knockout Cup with a 5-4 win on penalties against TS Galaxy.
