Danny Jordaan’s shocking SAFA salary claim
SAFA president Danny Jordaan made a shocking salary claim during his appearance at the Specialised Commercial Crime Court in Palm Ridge, Johannesburg, on Wednesday.
The SAFA supremo was arrested on Wednesday on charges of fraud and theft. He subsequently appeared in court alongside SAFA chief financial officer Gronie Hluyo and journalist-turned-businessman Trevor Neethling. 18 witnesses are listed in the matter.
The State did not oppose bail, and Jordaan said he had raised R10,000 for the bail amount. The trio was granted bail of R20,000.
Hawks spokesperson Colonel Katlego Mogale has previously said that, between 2014 and 2018, Jordaan allegedly used the organisation’s R1.3 million for personal gain, including hiring a private security company for personal protection and a public relations company without the board’s authorisation.
A packed courtroom, filled with SAFA NEC members, witnessed Jordaan’s appearance. Among the supporters were prominent figures like the association’s COO Advocate Tebogo Motlanthe, and CEO Lydia Monyepao.
The 73-year-old maintained that he had not been presented with a copy of the police document specifying the charges against him.
“The police came to fetch me at my house and brought me before this court,” he told Judge Willem Wepener.
He entered a plea of not guilty and applied for bail. Jordaan requested that his passport be retained, explaining that his work requires extensive international travel.
WHAT IS DANNY JORDAAN’S SHOCKING SALARY CLAIM?
The veteran administrator revealed details of his financial assets, including two properties and two vehicles. While he did not receive a salary, he claimed he was paid an annual allowance of between R0 and R100,000, linked to the association’s performance.
“As president of SAFA, I render my services on a volunteer basis with no salary paid to me. I’m, however, offered an honorarium payment once a year, ranging from no cent to approximately R100,000 depending on the performance of the association,” the court heard the contents of his affidavit.
His Johannesburg property is valued at R6 million, with his Eastern Cape house worth R4 million. The fittings and appliances in both homes are estimated to be worth around R2 million. Additionally, Jordaan owns a Mercedes-Benz and a BMW, with a combined value of over R700,000.
Meanwhile, Jordaan is set to accompany Bafana Bafana on their trip to Uganda for the crucial 2025 AFCON qualifier. The match against the Cranes is scheduled for Friday.
