Jose Riveiro’s emotional response to fans chanting his name

The echoes of “Riveiro, Riveiro, Riveiro” have become a familiar soundtrack for Jose Riveiro, a testament to the deep connection between the Spaniard and the Orlando Pirates faithful.

For the revered coach, each chant is a moment of pure, unadulterated emotion.

About 880 days ago, a relatively unknown 45-year-old Spaniard took the helm of Pirates. Dubbed a ‘plumber’ by some, Riveiro faced scepticism and doubt. Yet, he silenced the critics with unwavering dedication and tactical acumen.

In the ensuing 28 months, Riveiro has transformed the Buccaneers into a dominant force. Five trophies and two league runner-up finishes later, he has cemented his with The Ghost.

With a phenomenal 61% win rate, Riveiro has guided the team through 100 matches, claiming 61 victories, 20 draws, and 19 losses. The MTN8 trophy, lifted three times under his stewardship, and the Nedbank Cup twice, are a testament to his ability to deliver silverware.

But it’s not just the trophies that define the Vigo-born mentor’s impact. It’s the passion, the intensity, the unwavering belief in his players that has captured the hearts of the Pirates faithful. Under his tutelage, young guns – Relebohile Mofokeng and Mohau Nkota – have emerged.

As the chants of his name fill the stadium, you’d imagine Riveiro’s eyes well up with tears. It’s always a moment of pure gratitude, a recognition of the journey, the sacrifices and the unwavering support of the fans.

BUT, HOW DOES JOSE RIVEIRO RESPOND TO PIRATES FANS CHANTING HIS NAME?

Without a doubt, he has been enjoying a wave of unprecedented popularity among the Sea Robbers faithful. In a recent interview with Robert Marawa, Riveiro expressed his gratitude for the unique experience of having fans sing his name.

“When they’re singing my name, it’s something special. Honestly, it’s something that’s happening for the first time in my life. It’s a new space for me,” the 47-year-old said.

The coach went on to explain the deeper meaning behind the fans’ chants.

“They’re calling my name, but they’re singing much more things at the same time. It’s nice to see them expressing that happiness when they’re cheering the players’ names – Tito [Patrick Maswanganyi], [Evidence] Makgopa, [Mohau] Nkota. If they also choose the name of the coach, it’s something very special, especially when we’re playing at Orlando Stadium.”

Riveiro’s impact on the club has been undeniable. He has instilled a sense of belief and optimism among the players and fans alike.
