‘He has filled Themba Zwane’s role’: Arendse on Sundowns star
Former Mamelodi Sundowns defender Wayne Arendse has named a Masandawana star that has stepped up and filled captain Themba Zwane’s role.
In the past campaigns, Zwane has played a huge role in Sundowns’ success as they dominated the Betway Premiership.
The talented attacker was part of the Masandawana team that won eight league titles, two Telkom Knockout Cups [now called Carling Knockout Cup], one MTN8 title and one Nedbank Cup. On the continent, Zwane was part of the Tshwane giants that clinched the CAF Champions League, CAF Super Cup and the inaugural African Football League [AFL].
However, in the 2024/25 season, Mshishi was unfortunate as he suffered an Achilles injury and will be on the sidelines for four to six months. The 35-year-old sustained an injury whilst on international duty with Bafana Bafana against Congo Brazzaville in September in the AFCON qualifiers.
WAYNE ARENDSE SAYS LUCAS RIBEIRO HAS TAKEN OVER THEMBA ZWANE’S ROLE AT SUNDOWNS
Arendse says Brazilian attacker Lucas Ribeiro has elevated his game and took over Zwane’s role in the Sundowns team. In the current season, Ribeiro has continued with his great performances.
He has racked up seven goals and grabbed four assists in 12 matches in all competitions. In addition, Ribeiro was named Betway Premiership Player of the Month for September/October following great performances.
“[Lucas] Ribeiro is something else. From day one, he has been performing well on that Sundowns team, showing his quality,” Arendse told FARPost.
“I think he has filled Themba Zwane’s role very well after that long-term injury. He’s making those runs and makes the midfield click well.
“He has stepped up his performance in the team, and now he’s the main man making the team play well. Up front, he has continued with his scoring form, which is good to witness.”
