Patrick Maswanganyi impresses Bafana coach Hugo Broos, but…
Bafana Bafana head coach Hugo Broos has praised Patrick Maswanganyi’s recent form at national team level but is concerned about one critical element in the talented midfielder’s game.
Tipped to replace the injured Themba Zwane as Bafana Bafana’s creative spark, Maswanganyi has been in good form. The Orlando Pirates midfielder has netted in back-to-back international matches, showcasing his talent on the biggest stage.
Maswanganyi found the back of the net in Bafana’s 2-0 victory over Uganda at a packed Mandela National Stadium in Kampala last Friday. A few days later, he added another goal to his tally as South Africa brushed aside South Sudan 3-0 at a sold-out Cape Town Stadium, topping Group K of the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.
With Mshishi sidelined for an extended period due to an Achilles tendon injury, Maswanganyi shoulders the responsibility of filling the void left by the experienced playmaker. While Bafana coach Hugo Broos is impressed by Tito’s recent performances, he has emphasised the need for adaptation.
Broos hinted that Maswanganyi’s tendency to hold onto the ball for extended periods, a common sight at Pirates, might not be the most effective approach for Bafana. The coach emphasised the importance of quick passing and movement, urging Maswanganyi to prioritize these aspects of his game.
BROOS SAYS PATRICK MASWANGANYI SHOWS PROMISE BUT NEEDS IMPROVEMENT
“I’m very happy with Patrick’s performance, and I said it in the past. We need to look for someone who can replace Themba,” said Broos. “Yes, unfortunately, we have to do it earlier because [Zwane is injured. I wanted Themba to be with us now because I know how important he is for the national team.
“But what Patrick showed tonight [Tuesday against South Sudan] makes me happy. It’s not really what we want, but I asked him to play differently than at Pirates. He just needs to adapt to the way we play. But he has the potential; otherwise, I shouldn’t select him.”
“So with his game against Sudan, also on Friday [versus Uganda], he scored, which will give him certainly a boost of confidence, and I am pleased with his performance, but he still has to improve.
“He still needs to play and give passes, which is very important for us, and I’m sure he can, but he needs a little bit of time; but again, in the South Sudan game, he did what I asked, and I’m happy with his performance.”
