Notable absentee at Chiefs ahead of Richards Bay clash

There was a notable absentee as Kaizer Chiefs prepared for their league encounter against Richards Bay FC on Wednesday.

Amakhosi host the Natal Rich Boyz in a midweek clash set for the Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane.

They will be looking to bounce back to winning ways, having drawn against Magesi FC in their last league encounter. But the last time they played a fixture, they lost 4-0 to Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout Cup.

WHO WAS A NOTABLE ABSENTEE AT CHIEFS AT NATURENA?

Nkosingiphile Ngcobo was not part of the team, which went through its paces on Monday morning at the Kaizer Chiefs Village in Naturena.

The 25-year-old is said to have picked an injury during Sunday’s training session. Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi confirmed that he was a doubt for the midweek fixture.

“The only concern we have is Mshini, who came back very well [in recent weeks]. He got injured in training yesterday. We have to do a test today, but it’s uncertain [that he’ll play],” Nabi said.

Meanwhile, Nabi also gave an update on goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari, who was withdrawn when Rwanda played Nigeria in a recent AFCON qualifier. The Amavubi goalie did not finish that game due to injury.

“Ntwari came back from the national team slightly injured, but he returned to training two days ago. Between the three keepers, it’s open. We need the competition between the three; it’s open, and we will make the best decision based on their performance,” Nabi said.

The 25-year-old goalminder has started all official games this season. However, Nabi’s assistants Khalil Ben Youssef and Cedric Kaze would have been impressed by Brandon Petersen’s performance during the Home of Legends Cup.

Petersen was introduced as a second-half substitute for Bruce Bvuma in the 2-0 win over Golden Arrows. The former Bidvest Wits shot-stopper then played the final against Sundowns. It ended goalless. Chiefs won the Home of Legends Cup after a penalty shootout.
