Upington City FC sign ex-Sundowns midfielder

Motsepe Foundation Championship side Upington City FC has concluded the signing of ex-Mamelodi Sundowns midfielder Promise Mkhuma.

City announced the signing of Mkhuma on Tuesday afternoon after the attacking midfielder spent the past three weeks training with the club.

The 24-year-old has been a free agent for over four months after parting ways with Mamelodi Sundowns on the 30th of June 2024.

The Brazilians decided against offering the promising attacker a new deal after the player’s contract with the club expired at the end of the 2023/24 Betway Premiership season.

Mkhuma struggled to hold down a regular starting berth at Sundowns since he gained promotion from the club’s development structures to the senior team in 2019.

The former SA’s junior international went out on different loan spells during his time at Downs in search of playing minutes and to gain much-needed experience in the SA elite league.

PROMISE MKHUMA SPENT THE PREVIOUS CAMPAIGN ON LOAN AT AMATUKS

In the previous campaign, Mkhuma had a season-long loan spell at AmaTuks, where he played 11 matches without contributing any goal.

Mkhuma was also sent out on loan to the now-defunct All Stars during the 2022/23 season in the NFD. At Stars, the skilful midfielder played 12 matches and scored two goals.

The right-footed midfielder will compete with Jabulani Shongwe, Tlotlo Leepile, Bokang Mokwena, and Orebotse Mongae for a place in the starting line-up at Upington City FC.

Meanwhile, Promise Mkhuma will look to add value at Upington as they push for promotion to the elite league next season. Bafana Ba Gucci have had a promising start to the new season in the Championship, and they are currently in sixth place on the log standings.

The Northern Cape-based outfit won four league games, drew four and lost on three occasions. They collected 16 points after 11 games.

Upington are in their second season in the second-tier after gaining promotion from ABC Motsepe League at the start of last season.
