Thamsanqa Gabuza resurfaces at PSL side

Former Orlando Pirates and SuperSport United striker Thamsanqa Gabuza has resurfaced at a PSL side as the 2024/25 season progresses.

The 36-year-old has been a free agent since parting ways with TS Galaxy early this year. Durban City FC chairman Farook Kadodia has explained why the club decided against signing the veteran forward.

The 37-year-old was recently assessed by Durban City FC, who ended up signing Ruzaigh Gamaldien instead. Gabuza even took part in the pre-season tournament KZN Premier Cup and looked set to sign on the dotted line.

However, the club’s chairman, Farook Kadodia, is on record as saying that Gabuza did not meet the club’s fitness expectations. The Ladysmith-born striker has been clubless for almost nine months after leaving TS Galaxy in February 2024.

Gabuza spent four seasons at SuperSport United under Gavin Hunt, netting 22 goals and providing seven assists in 118 appearances. In his time at Pirates, Gabuza made 95 appearances, scoring 11 goals and providing six assists.

Sources indicate that Gabuza has been training with Pretoria University this week, with the club eyeing him as a potential attacking reinforcement. AmaTuks, currently in 10th position in the Motsepe Championship, have struggled to find the back of the net, scoring only eight goals in 11 matches.

The Tshwane-based side is keen to add firepower upfront to improve their attacking output.

WHAT THAMSANQA GABUZA NEEDS TO DO TO IMPRESS

Having been out of action for a lengthy period, the club will be eager to see if he can handle the intensity of the second-tier league.

“The biggest concern is whether he will have the physical capability to handle the demands of the league, having been out of action for a while now,” a source close to the player confirmed.

In a separate development, AmaTuks has appointed Sammy Troughton as a strategic advisor to bolster the team’s performance and push for promotion back to the top flight.

Troughton will work closely with the head coach Tlisane Motaung, known to admire him. The two have a long-standing relationship, with Motaung having played under Troughton as a student.
