Ex-Chiefs goalkeeper urges PSL players to learn from Khune

Former Kaizer Chiefs shot-stopper William Shongwe has imparted valuable wisdom to current PSL players, urging them to follow in the footsteps of the legendary Itumeleng Khune.

Khune, a household name in SA football, has enjoyed a stellar career with both Bafana Bafana and Chiefs. However, his illustrious journey took a tumultuous turn in the 2023/24 season.

Khune’s contract with Amakhosi concluded at the end of the season, marking the end of a long and successful tenure. The Soweto giants had intended to retain him in an ambassadorial capacity and as a mentor to younger goalkeepers.

However, a highly publicised incident involving Khune arriving at training under the influence of alcohol disrupted these plans. This resulted in his suspension, the removal of his captaincy, and, ultimately, his departure from the club.

Despite this setback, Khune’s legacy as one of South Africa’s greatest goalkeepers remains intact. His influence on young players, particularly goalkeepers, is undeniable

WILLIAM SHONGWE SAYS PSL PLAYERS SHOULD INVEST IN BUSINESSES LIKE ITUMELENG KHUNE

Shongwe has encouraged current PSL players to invest in businesses while they are still actively earning as footballers. This advice echoes the example set by Itumeleng Khune, who recently revealed his ownership stake in the sports betting company Topbet and his role as a brand ambassador.

Additionally, Khune has taken on the role of a SABC Sport analyst. He joins a growing list of current and former footballers who have successfully ventured into the business world.

Moreover, Khune has taken to Instagram to share glimpses of his new chapter. The 37-year-old has been posting images of himself on various construction sites, clad in personal protective equipment.

“I’m very happy with what Khune is doing with his life after football [being an owner of Topbet]”, Shongwe told FARPost.

“If it’s sustaining him and his family, it’s a good thing for him. At the moment, he’s the only one who knows about his future, whether he will continue playing football or retire.

“Current PSL players should follow Khune and invest in businesses that will sustain them and their families in the event that they are not playing football. For me, that’s a good example, and I think players should look into that; it will help them in future.

“One thing for sure, football can be a very short career. Planning and investing is very important whilst you are still playing and earning.”
