Nabi explains Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s resurgence at Chiefs
Kaizer Chiefs head coach Nasreddine Nabi has shed light on the factors that have contributed to Sibongiseni Mthethwa’s recent resurgence and return to the starting line-up at the Soweto giants.
Mthethwa has enjoyed a recent upturn in form in Chiefs colours, impressing in their last two Betway Premiership matches.
The 30-year-old had been struggling to cement his place in the team since the arrival of coach Nabi, with reports suggesting a potential departure. However, under Nabi’s guidance, Mthethwa appears to have found a new lease of life.
His impressive performances during the Home of Legends Cup in Gqeberha earned him a starting spot against Richards Bay FC and Royal AM in the league.
Nabi attributes Mthethwa’s improved form to his better understanding of his role and increased effort to address his weaknesses.
NASREDDINE NABI IMPRESSED WITH THE PROGRESS MADE BY SIBONGISENI MTHETHWA
“I think this time “Ox” [Sibongiseni Mthethwa] understands his role. We worked together on his negative points,” said Nabi.
“Ox” worked hard to improve the negative points. If he works hard, he will progress. He took his chance and worked for his chance. Same with all players. I congratulate Ox for his performance.”
Meanwhile, Nabi revealed that he delivered a stern halftime team talk after his side squandered a two-goal lead against Royal AM at Peter Mokaba Stadium on Saturday. The league tie ended in a 2-2 draw, leaving Chiefs disappointed.
CHIEFS COACH NABI REVEALS WHAT HE TOLD HIS PLAYERS AT HALF-TIME
Nabi admitted that he was frustrated with his players’ missed chances and let them know in no uncertain terms during the break.
“It’s how many opportunities we were missing, and after those 25 minutes of the first-half,” he added.
“We felt that everyone was playing for himself. What was happening on the field was unacceptable. That’s what the speech was about because we missed a lot of goals, and even during half-time in the change room, that was just the speech.”
