Why Fawaaz Basadien missed Stellenbosch FC’s recent matches

Stellenbosch FC head coach Steve Barker has shed light on the reasons behind star player Fawaaz Basadien’s recent absence from the team.

Basadien has established himself as a vital player in the Stellenbosch FC starting line-up, consistently showcasing his skills and determination each time he takes to the pitch. His reliability and performance quality has made him a favourite among fans and coaches alike.

In the lead-up to the current season, there were reports linking him with a transfer to Kaizer Chiefs. However, the deal ultimately fell through, allowing Basadien to continue his journey with Stellenbosch.

The 27-year-old has been sidelined for the Stellies’ last two matches—one against Stade Malien in the CAF Confederation Cup and another against Orlando Pirates in the Betway Premiership.

In his absence, emerging talent Omega Mdaka stepped in to fill his role as a fullback, showcasing the depth of talent on the Stellenbosch roster.

Basadien’s strong performances at the club level did not go unnoticed, leading to his selection for the Bafana Bafana squad in the 2025 AFCON qualifiers.

In the current season, Basadien has played a total of 17 matches across all competitions, in which he has made a notable impact by scoring five goals and providing two assists. His contributions extend beyond attacking prowess; he has been instrumental in helping Stellenbosch maintain nine clean sheets, showcasing his defensive capabilities as a left-back.

Barker has confirmed that Basadien is currently on mini paternity leave after the birth of his child. The talented left-back requested time off to be with his family during this special moment.

“Fawaaz Basadien became a father for the first time this [Sunday] morning, so congratulations to him,” revealed Barker. “Hence, we gave Omega Mdaka another opportunity to play, and he took the opportunity. Well done to him for doing that.

“His wife was due at any stage during the week. Being a first-time father, he requested to stay home with her in case she had the baby early in the week.

“We granted him that, and we knew that over the weekend, it could probably happen. So we gave him time off to be with his wife.”

The talented defender is expected to be back when the Cape Town outfit hostsRS Burkane in the Confed Cup on Sunday, 8 December, at Moses Mabhida Stadium. Kickoff is at 3 PM.
