Sought-after Benni McCarthy gives latest on his future
Former Manchester United first-team coach Benni McCarthy has shared some light on his future amid links to a few clubs both locally and abroad.
The 47-year-old coach has been unattached for close to six months now after leaving the Red Devils at the end of his contract in June.
Man United replaced the 2004 UEFA Champions League winner with their former striker Ruud van Nistelrooy who was also released after just four months into the job.
Following his exit from Carrington, McCarthy was linked with an unnamed club in the MLS in the USA.
Meanwhile, in South Africa, the Bafana Bafana legend rejected AmaZulu FC, who wanted him to return for a second spell. Moreover, Mamelodi Sundowns and Richards Bay FC were reportedly after his services at some point.
McCarthy says he’s keeping his options open for both Betway Premiership or Europe for any “established” and ambitious club.
He then revealed that he’s had interviews with a few clubs in Europe and was waiting for feedback.
MCCARTHY ON WHAT’S NEXT FOR HIS CAREER
“I think I’m itching to get back, but it must be the right project for me,” said McCarthy in an interview with Sports Night Amplied with Andile on Metro FM.
“I don’t wanna go into another situation I had with AmaZulu, where you do exceptionally well, and then you’re kind of being held back instead of you pushing to take things further.
“So, I want a club that’s established, that knows what they want and where they want to see themselves in the next two, three seasons.
“If it is in line with what I want to do, with what I have in mind for myself, then yes of course I’m open to coming back to South Africa.
“But I’m also open to Europe and I’ve had a few interviews with some clubs. Now, I’m just waiting for feedback. Whichever comes up first then I will consider it seriously.”
