Tebogo Moloi issues Percy Tau warning to Orlando Pirates
Former Orlando Pirates assistant coach Tebogo Moloi has issued a stern warning to the Soweto giants about facing Bafana Bafana and Al Ahly attacker Percy Tau in the CAF Champions League.
Pirates will face Tau’s Al Ahly in a crucial CAF Champions League Group B clash on Saturday, December 7th, at Orlando Stadium. Kick-off is set for 3 PM.
The two sides last met in the 2013 Champions League final, where Al Ahly emerged victorious with a 3-1 aggregate win. Pirates won the first leg 1-0 at home but lost the return leg 2-0 in Cairo.
Both teams are looking to build on their positive starts to the group stage. Pirates defeated CR Belouizdad 2-0 away, while Al Ahly secured a 4-2 home win against Stade d’Abidjan.
However, Bafana star Tau has been struggling for form and consistency at Al Ahly. With his contract expiring in June 2025, his future with the Egyptian giants remains uncertain. He fell out of favour with the Egyptian giants head coach Marcel Koller.
The 30-year-old has made 10 appearances across all competitions this season, scoring two goals in the Champions League Al Ahly.
WHY TEBOGO MOLOI IS WORRIED ABOUT PERCY TAU FACING ORLANDO PIRATES
The 56-year-old Pirates legend, Moloi, has cautioned the club against underestimating the threat posed by Tau.
“For me, Percy Tau is one of our best players whether we like it or not. He may be going through a difficult time, but we all know what he can do,” Moloi told FARPost.
“You cannot rule out Percy Tau with the roots of Mamelodi Sundowns and that rivalry. When he plays, he will say, ‘I’m playing against Pirates, and I should bring my A-game’.
“On the day, he can be a surprise against us. He knows what it takes to face Pirates; it’s not just playing any other team. A good performance can help him to get back to the national team.
“We’ve seen it with Khanyisa Mayo when he scored against Pirates; it was like he scored a winning goal in the World Cup. The understanding of any other SA player [playing outside of the country] who faces Pirates is different.”
