Erasmus endorses Rele Mofokeng’s potential move to Barcelona

Amidst growing speculation linking Orlando Pirates sensation Relebohile Mofokeng to FC Barcelona, Kermit Erasmus has weighed in, offering his endorsement for the youngster’s potential move to the Spanish giants.

Media reports about Mofokeng’s links to Barcelona have gained momentum in recent weeks as the midfield sensation continues to play a pivotal role at Pirates.

It has been said that Barcelona has been closely monitoring Mofokeng’s progress and is keen to secure his services for their B team.

The 20-year-old broke into the first-team with the Buccaneers in the latter stages of the 2022/23 season after he was promoted from the club’s DStv Diski Challenge side.

Since breaking into the Pirates senior team, Mofokeng has scored 10 goals and provided 14 assists in 57 matches across all competitions. In his first full season in the previous campaign, Mofokeng won Young Player of the Season award for the 2023/24 season.

His impressive performances earned him a place in the Hugo Broos‘ Bafana Bafana squad in the past few months. Mofokeng made his Bafana Bafana debut against Zimbabwe in the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers at the Toyota Stadium on the 11th of June, 2024.

Moreover, earlier this year, Mofokeng was also on trials at the English Premier League side Wolverhampton Wanderers FC.

With the School of Excellence product reportedly on the wishlist of both Rangers and Barcelona, his former teammate Kermit Erasmus has envisioned Mofokeng playing alongside Lamine Yamal.

Erasmus, who parted ways with Pirates upon the expiry of his contract in June 2024, says Mofokeng would fit in the Barca set-up.

“You must come see our superstar [Mofokeng], please coach. My people will send you videos in the comment section,” Erasmus commented on Barcelona coach Hansi Flick’s post on X [Twitter].

“Him [Mofokeng] on the left [wing] and Lamine on the right. Sweets and chocolate.

“You [supporter] haven’t seen the things I’ve seen. So I know what I’m talking about,” Erasmus added when a football fan on X disagreed that Mofokeng could make it at Barcelona.

Meanwhile, the former Mamelodi Sundowns star remains without a club since his exit from the Soweto giants.

Erasmus was training with Motsepe Foundation Championship side Cape Town Spurs, who opted against signing him.
