Update on the theft and fraud case against Danny Jordaan
The Palm Ridge Magistrate Court has postponed the fraud case against SAFA president Danny Jordaan and his co-accused.
Jordaan was arrested last month over allegations he used SAFA’s money amounting to R1.3 million for his own purposes.
The 73-year-old is accused of hiring a private security company for his personal protection and a public relations company without authorisation from the SAFA board.
Jordaan has been granted bail for R20 000 together with SAFA’s chief financial officer, Gronie Hluyo, and businessman Trevor Neethling.
THE THEFT AND FRAUD CASE AGAINST SAFA PRESIDENT DANNY JORDAAN POSTPONED
The three made a second appearance on Thursday, 5 December. The case has since been postponed to Tuesday, 10 December. This is to allow Jordaan and SAFA CFO Gronie Hluyo to make a formal application to have the matter struck off the role.
WHERE THE CASE AGAINST THE SAFA PRESIDENT COMES FROM
A search operation was conducted at the SAFA offices in March this year relating to the appointment of two service providers, Grit Communications and Badger Security. Grit is owned by Neethling.
The company was hired to spruce up Jordaan’s image at the height of allegations against him, including rape accusations made by singer Jennifer Ferguson.
The PR firm aimed to soften the blow of perceived hostile media coverage and place Jordaan at the centre of the revival of the battered image of SAFA. This was from October 2017 to August 2019.
Jordaan had initially filed an urgent application to interdict his arrest and prosecution. However, the application was unsuccessful.
Jordaan legal representative Lesedi Mphahlele has described the case as a frivolous smear campaign by disgruntled members who have tried it over the years.
There have also been calls for Jordaan to step down from his position as SAFA president. But the 73-year-old is yet to comment on the matter.
