Why former Pirates striker anticipates a lower number of goals
With eight rounds of matches played so far, former Orlando Pirates striker Andries Sebola has given reasons why he believes the league will have a top scorer with less than 15 goals.
Evidence Makgopa of Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns duo of Iqraam Rayners and Ribeiro Costa are the current leading scorers with four goals each.
Mabasa scooped the Lesley Manyathela Award last season with 16 goals. The last time the premiership had a top scorer with over 20 goals was during the 2021/22 season, with 23 by Sundowns hitman Peter Shalulile.
Sebola says he is concerned with the lack of creativity from clubs and does not anticipate any player to reach the 20-goal mark.
ANDRIES SEBOLA EXPLAINS HIS REASONS WHY STRIKERS WILL SCORE FEWER GOALS THIS SEASON
“I don’t see any player who can score more than 15 goals this season because of the tactics the coaches are using,” Sebola told FARPost.
“They are using a lot of defensive set-up in the games that I have seen so far. Some want to save their jobs. There is no more creativity from the midfield to create chances for the strikers. That’s one thing that I have seen.”

“Even when you watched how Magesi were playing against the so-called big teams until they won the Carling Knockout. They were more defensive, not creating more chances to score. They were using counterattacks to score goals. Even some of the big teams, it’s more or less the same story,” added Sebola.
“Midfielders are also coming into the picture if you look at some of the goals that have been scored. So I don’t see any player scoring more than 15 goals, to be honest.”
Betway Premiership action is set to resume this weekend after a few matches were postponed during the week.
