Ex-Bucs coach Tebogo Moloi on what Pirates players must understand
Former Orlando Pirates assistant coach Tebogo Moloi has shared his insights on what he believes the current squad needs to understand to achieve more success.
Pirates have enjoyed a remarkable period of success under Jose Riveiro, establishing themselves as one of the top clubs in SA football.
The ‘Happy People’ have recently retained the MTN8 title for a third consecutive time and have consistently performed well in the DStv Premiership, amassing 21 points from eight matches.
Furthermore, Pirates have qualified for the CAF Champions League group stages for the first time since the 2018/19 season, showcasing their ambition on the continental stage.
In the last two seasons, Riveiro has guided the club to five trophies, including the Nedbank Cup title. However, the league title and Carling Knockout Cup remain elusive.
Pirates legend Moloi believes that the current squad, bolstered by quality signings in recent seasons, has the potential to achieve even greater heights. However, he emphasises the importance of maintaining high standards and fulfilling the expectations of the passionate Pirates fanbase.
Moloi acknowledged the meticulous planning and hard work that has underpinned Pirates’ recent success.
TEBOGO MOLOI REVEALS: WHAT ORLANDO PIRATES PLAYERS NEED TO GRASP
“It’s a bunch of special players; you cannot pick and choose one or two. If one combination doesn’t do the job in a certain match, the other one comes in and performs,” Moloi told FARPost.
“I’m happy about their good start to the season. They have been consistent even though they haven’t done well in some matches. They must go back to that loss against Magesi FC [in the Carling Knockout Cup], go back to that loss against Stellenbosch FC [in the league], and try to correct those minor mistakes.
“The players need to understand that they are at a different stage now, and a lot is expected of them. They have given their people hope [Orlando Pirates supporters] of another successful season by winning titles.
“The coaches have been planning for this in the past three seasons, and it seems like the plan is well in motion now. They are scoring goals, at the back they are solid, that shows a change in character and winning mentality.”
