CT Spurs’ slump deepens: 7 defeats, 2 draws in last nine games

Cape Town Spurs are in freefall. The Urban Warriors have plunged into a deep crisis, suffering a staggering seven defeats in their last nine matches in the second-tier league.

The latest setback, a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Highbury FC on Saturday afternoon, has left them teetering on the brink of disaster in the Motsepe Foundation Championship.

The shock loss saw CT Spurs remain above the relegation zone in 14th place on the log standings. After 13 matches, they have recorded only two victories and accumulated a mere 10 points. Midfielder Thokozani Ngubani scored the decisive goal for the PSL newcomers – Highbury in the second half.

The once-promising start to the new season, with two wins and two draws in their opening four games, has turned into a nightmare for CT Spurs under experienced coach Ernst Middendorp.

CT Spurs appears devoid of confidence, plagued by individual errors, and seemingly incapable of finding a way to break their losing streak. Furthermore, CT Spurs’ coach has occasionally voiced criticism of refereeing decisions this campaign. However, the Cape club has also publicly acknowledged and commended match officials when they performed well.

Despite facing mounting pressure, Middendorp will continue to lead the team, as the CT Spurs management reaffirmed most recently. This comes after speculation had been rife regarding the German coach’s future, but the club has reiterated its support for him.

In a team meeting last month, players were informed that Middendorp would remain head coach, as reported by FARPost. Club chairman Ari Efstathiou expressed confidence in Middendorp’s ability to turn the team’s fortunes around.

BAROKA FC CLAIM LIMPOPO DERBY BRAGGING RIGHTS

Baroka currently occupies eighth place on the log standings with five wins, four draws and four defeats. However, with only six points separating them from league leaders Durban City FC after 13 games, they remain firmly in contention for the top spot.

Meanwhile, Durban City, previously known as Maritzburg United, climbed to the summit after their 3-0 win over Leruma United at the Chatsworth Stadium on Saturday evening.

Sunday’s action in the second-tier league saw a flurry of goals, with nine scored across just two matches.

In Pretoria, Orbit College FC secured a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Pretoria Callies at the TUT Stadium, earning them all three points on the road.

Meanwhile, in Upington, Kruger United dominated Upington City FC, claiming a resounding 3-1 win at the Mxolisi Dicky Jacobs Stadium.
