Stellenbosch suffer second consecutive defeat in CAF Confed Cup
Stellenbosch FC suffered their second consecutive defeat in the CAF Confederation Cup, losing 3-1 to RS Berkane at the Moses Mabhida Stadium on Sunday afternoon.
Youssef Zghoudi scored twice for Berkane, with Reda Hajji adding a third while Chumani Butsaka scored Stellenbosch’s lone goal.
The visitors started the match aggressively, immediately pinning Stellenbosch back. Youssef Zghoudi capitalised on a Youssef Mehri cross, heading the ball into the net in the 5th minute.
While Stellenbosch enjoyed periods of ball possession, the Moroccan defence effectively limited their attacking options, preventing them from creating significant scoring chances.
Mouin Chaâbani’s side exploited the space behind the Stellenbosch defence launching dangerous counter-attacks whenever they regained possession.
BRACE FOR YOUSSEF ZGHOUDI
A well-executed free-kick from Ayoub Khairi was met with a clinical header from Youssef Zghoudi, who scored his second goal of the match and further cemented the visitors’ lead.
In the 34th minute, Sage Stephens made a crucial intervention, parrying Paul Bassene’s close-range shot to stop the ball from going in.
Stellenbosch enjoyed the lion’s share of possession after the initial period of Berkane dominance. They created a couple of promising attacking opportunities, but the Moroccan side’s disciplined defensive performance prevented them from reducing the deficit. Berkane maintained their 2-0 lead at halftime.
In the second half, Barker made the attack-minded change, taking off Ashley Cupido and bringing on Sanele Barns.
STELLENBOSCH’S RESPONSE IN THE SECOND HALF
Stellenbosch emerged from the halftime break with renewed vigor, storming forward in search of an early goal. However, Berkane’s defence remained resolute, denying them any breakthrough.
In response to Stellenbosch’s increased pressure, Berkane adjusted their tactics to focus on consolidating their two-goal advantage and preserving their lead.
Desperate to spark a comeback, Barker introduced Langelihle Phili to add more firepower, taking off Sihle Nduli. However, Reda Hajji’s stunning long-range effort sealed the deal for Berkane. Butsaka managed to pull one back for the hosts in the dying minutes.
