Match ‘abruptly’ halted due to kit colour clash in Limpopo Motsepe League
In an unusual turn of events, a SAFA Limpopo ABC Motsepe League match between Royal Pirates and Sunrise FC was called off over the weekend due to a kit colour clash.
The incident took place on Saturday, December 7th, at Mapodile Stadium in Burgersfort. The game was disrupted after 15 minutes when the home team, Royal Pirates, refused to continue, citing a “conflict of kit colours,” as confirmed by Sunrise FC in their statement.
This impasse arose after the Royal Pirates captain defiantly disregarded the referee’s repeated instructions to return to his goalkeeping position. The captain asserted his authority, refusing to comply with the referee’s directives.
Royal Pirates donned black kits, while Sunrise FC wore purple jerseys. However, Sunrise FC’s alternate kit was black and yellow, and they also had a warm-up kit lacking numbers, leaving them with insufficient suitable options to address the kit clash.
SUNRISE FC OFFICIAL STATEMENT
“Today’s clash against Royal Pirates ended abruptly as they refused to continue, citing a clash of kit colours, despite the referee’s decision to proceed,” read the club’s statement.
“Our boys started the game strong, showing determination, with a goal by Edward Manqele ruled offside and a couple of missed chances.
“This marks the last match of the year 2024. A heartfelt thank you to our fans for your unwavering support throughout the season. Stay tuned for any updates as we prepare for an even stronger return next year.”
This matter will be one of the cases that will go for review and resolution as per the league’s regulations.
