Erasmus gives candid assessment of Sirino amid challenges at Chiefs

Former Orlando Pirates and Mamelodi Sundowns attacker Kermit Erasmus has given a candid assessment of Gaston Sirino amid his challenges related to ill-discipline at Kaizer Chiefs.

Sirino has been at the centre of controversy due to reported misconduct, including missing training sessions and violating Chiefs’ protocols.

A few days ago, SoccerLaduma reported that Sirino cited injuries as the reason for his continued absenteeism from Chiefs training.

The 33-year-old was involved in another incident that questioned his commitment to the Soweto giants. Sirino attempted to stay behind when Chiefs travelled to Eastern Cape to play the Home of Legends Cup a few weeks ago.

Gaston Sirino eventually joined the rest of the team in Gqeberha, but he didn’t feature in the one-day tournament that the Chiefs subsequently won.

The Uruguayan midfielder signed with the Glamour Boys ahead of the 2024/25 Betway Premiership season on a free transfer after parting ways with Sundowns. He signed a two-year deal with Amakhosi and was one of the marquee signings for coach Nasreddine Nabi.

In the current campaign, the skilful attacker has featured in nine matches across all competitions. In the process, he scored two goals and provided four assists.

Despite having an impressive start to life at Chiefs, Sirino has seen a dip in form in the past few matches. The talented star last found the back of the net when The Glamour Boys played to a 2-2 draw against Magesi FC in the league on the 30th of October 2024.

WHAT DID KERMIT ERASMUS SAY ABOUT GASTON SIRINO?

In contrast to growing concerns over Sirino’s commitment to Chiefs, Erasmus says the midfield sensation works very hard in training. The duo played together during their time at Sundowns.

“Sirino is a great guy; he works hard in training, and he loves being his own human being. He can be very playful off the field. I’ve never had any problems or issues with him while I was playing with him at Sundowns,” Erasmus said on the SoccerBeat YouTube channel.

“You can see the impact he has as a player; when he’s in the mood, he brings his A-game. He still struggles with English, but when I play with him, we’ll communicate without even speaking to each other. That just shows you the football brains he has. If you are not alert around him, he might pass you the ball without you expecting, and you’ll look bad.

“So he’s one of the smartest players, he’s unpredictable, and you must always be ready as an attacking player when he has the ball.”
