What Patrick Mayo makes of his son’s progress Khanyisa in Algeria

Patrick Mayo, the father of Bafana Bafana and CR Belouizdad striker Khanyisa Mayo, has provided a candid assessment of his son’s progress in the Algerian top flight.

During his playing days, Patrick Mayo, a retired attacker who later became a defender, had stints with Kaizer Chiefs and SuperSport United. He also played for the now-defunct sides Bay United and Thanda Royal Zulu.

Khanyisa Mayo joined Belouizdad ahead of the 2024/25 campaign from Betway Premiership side Cape Town City FC. Before moving to Algeria, the 26-year-old was linked with a move to the PSL giants Mamelodi Sundowns and Kaizer Chiefs, but the deals didn’t go through.

Upon his arrival in North Africa, the talented striker struggled for form. However, he seems to be heading towards the right direction with Belouizdad.

In 11 matches across all competitions, the former Richards Bay FC centre-forward has found the back of the net twice. Mayo has netted two goals in his last three games. This was in the matches against Orlando Pirates in the CAF Champions League, whilst the second goal was against Aso Chief in the Algerian Ligue Professionnelle 1.

PATRICK MAYO SAYS KHANYISA MAYO IS COMING UP NICELY AND PROGRESSING WELL

In an interview with FARPost, Patrick Mayo believes his son, Khanyisa Mayo, is making good progress in Algeria. What impressed Patrick the most is that Khanyisa has managed to remain fit and injury-free.

“I’m happy for him [Khanyisa Mayo] with how he has performed so far because it’s not an easy move from Cape Town City FC to Algeria,” said Mayo.

“I spoke to him before he went to Algeria and told him that he must work very hard. The game in Algeria is completely different from the SA league, for me I think it’s very physical.

“But I think he’s coming up nicely there; he’s adapting very well and progressing well, and we speak frequently on the phone. I’m happy that he’s been injury-free ever since he moved to Algeria. As long as he’s getting those opportunities to play, he will get back to his best form.”
