Orlando Pirates part ways with Mthethwa, grant Otladisa loan move
Orlando Pirates have announced a double transfer update, confirming the departure of defender Sandile Mthethwa while also sending midfielder Katlego Otladisa out on loan for the remainder of the season.
In a mutual decision, Pirates and Mthethwa parted ways to allow the player to pursue opportunities at a club where he can consistently get playing time.
Mthethwa has not featured for Pirates this season, as coach Jose Riveiro has preferred a defensive pairing of players like Thabiso Sesane, Olisa Ndah, Tapelo Xoki and Nkosinathi Sibisi.
The fierce competition for places at centre-back has limited Mthethwa’s opportunities. While both Ndah and Xoki have been sidelined with injuries, Mthethwa failed to break into the starting line-up.
Since joining Pirates in 2016, Mthethwa has consistently faced challenges securing regular playing time. He struggled to establish himself under different coaches. The defender was previously loaned out to both Chippa United and Richards Bay FC to gain valuable experience.
Throughout his time at Pirates, the 27-year-old defender only made 21 appearances across all competitions. During his stay at the club, he won the MTN8 and Nedbank Cup titles.
PIRATES BID FAREWELL TO DEDICATED SANDILE MTHETHWA
Orlando Pirates Football Club can confirm the departure of defender Sandile Mthethwa,” reads the club statement.
“Both parties have agreed for the amicable separation to allow him to move to a club of his choice. At 27 years old, Mthethwa is entering his prime. And whilst the technical team wanted him to stay – the guarantee of regular football was not possible.
“Mthethwa joined the club in 2016 as a young boy having been spotted at an annual youth tournament in KZN. He was one of three players identified at the tournament. The other two are Thobela Sikhakhane and Brian Hlongwa.
“Mthethwa went on to captain the first Project X Tour to the UK and later captained the MultiChoice Diski Challenge squad before being promoted to the first team, where he went on to feature in over 20 official matches.
“He will be remembered for his professionalism and discipline at all times. We wish him well as he enters a new chapter in his career. Thank You, Sandile.”
Meanwhile, in a separate move, Pirates confirmed that midfielder Otladisa will join Sekhukhune United on loan for the remainder of the 2024/25 season.
Otladisa, who joined Pirates in 2023 after impressing at Marumo Gallants, has yet to feature for the Soweto giants this campaign.
This loan move to Babina Noko will provide Otladisa with an opportunity to regain his confidence. At Pirates, the 28-year-old attacker has made only 12 appearances across all competitions, failing to register a goal or an assist.
