Why Edward Manqele struggled at Chiefs and Sundowns
Veteran striker Edward Manqele has opened up on what he believes was a stumbling block to cement regular places during his stay at both Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns.
Manqele spent over two years at ‘Masandawana’ and managed only four goals in 26 appearances. He was also loaned to Moroka Swallows before he was sold to Chippa United.
The 37-year-old also spent two seasons at ‘Amakhosi’ with just 23 appearances. He later went back for a stint at Free State Stars, Tshakhuma Tsha Madzivhandila [TTM] and Royal AM.
He has now resurfaced in the third-tier league at SAFA Limpopo ABC Motsepe League side Sunrise FC.
EDWARD MANQELE MAKES HONEST ADMISSION ABOUT HIS STAY AT BOTH MAMELODI SUNDOWNS AND KAIZER CHIEFS
A lot was expected from the striker after a memorable season at now-defunct Free State Stars during the 2011/12 season.
In an interview with FARPost, he said that although he fought for his place, there were contributing factors that made him not find it easy at both Chiefs and Sundowns.
“At Sundowns, it became a bit difficult because when you get there, you find players who are in the same position. You would find the seven of you in one position,” he told FARPost.
“So it was a bit difficult. But then, as a player, you don’t have to give up because I have played certain games and scored in a few.”
WHY THE STAY AT AMAKHOSI WAS NOT AS FRUITFUL FOR VETERAN STRIKER
“At Chiefs, I struggled a bit because you get there, and you find the likes of Bernard Parker still doing good,” he said.
“I also found Siphelele Mthembu; there was also Bongani Ndulula. So the competition was a bit hectic, but as a player, you need to fight for your spot.”
At the age of 37, Manqele has revealed that he still wants to play for two more years before he can think of calling it quits. He also tells this publication that he does not rule out the prospect of a return to the PSL.
