Gavin Hunt explains delayed Abubeker Nassir debut
SuperSport United coach Gavin Hunt has explained why he opted against giving new signing Abubeker Nassir a debut match on Saturday in a league game.
Nassir recently joined ‘Matsatsantsa a Pitori’ after spending two seasons at neighbours Mamelodi Sundowns. The 24-year-old has not played any official match for SuperSport to date.
But he came close on Saturday when SuperSport beat Magesi FC 1-0 at the Lucas Moripe Stadium. Nassir was an unused substitute for the match.
Hunt has since explained why he decided against giving Nassir some game time even though he initially wanted to.
WHY GAVIN HUNT COULD NOT GIVE NEW SIGNING ABUBEKER NASSIR HIS OFFICIAL DEBUT
“I wanted to bring him in, but I just felt the time wasn’t right,” said Hunt. “He has only been training for two weeks. I mean, he has been out for two years. We saw some glimpses at training.
“So yeah, we are going to have to see, but he will add huge value with his pace, which we don’t have in some areas. I think he can do a job for us. So let’s see.”
BRADLEY GROBLER NETS HIS SECOND GOAL FOR SUPERSPORT UNITED
Meanwhile, veteran striker Bradley Grobler scored his second goal for the season since coming back from an injury layoff. Hunt’s decision to leave him on the field proved to be the correct decision, as the 36-year-old scored his second goal in two matches.
“We were going to take him off, but I said no chance, leave him there,” explained Hunt. “If the ball falls on him in the box, he is the one who can score. So I am happy for him, so let’s keep going.”
Meanwhile, SuperSport will return to action on 28 December when they take on Stellenbosch FC in a Betway Premiership match.
