Stellenbosch register first Confed Cup Group Stage win
Stellenbosch FC registered their first win in the CAF Confederation Cup on Sunday after defeating Angolan side Lunda Sul 1-0 at Estadio 11 de Novembro in a Group B encounter.
Stellenbosch FC finally broke through in the CAF Confederation Cup group stages, securing their first victory with a hard-fought 1-0 win over Angolan side Lunda Sul at Estadio 11 de Novembro on Sunday.
This crucial win in Group B will provide a much-needed boost of confidence for the SA side as they strive to advance further in the competition.
In the other two previous matches, Stellenbosch suffered defeats. Firstly, they were defeated by Malian side Stade Malien 2-0 away from home. Then, the Cape Town side lost 3-1 against Moroccan outfit RS Berkane
at the iconic Moses Mabhida Stadium.
‘The Stellies’ became the second SA top-flight to play against Lunda Sul this season in the competition. Lunda eliminated Sekhukhune United from the competition on the away goal rule in the second preliminary round after a 2-2 draw on aggregate. In first leg, Lunda Sul won 1-0, in the second leg Sekhukhune grabbed a 2-1 victory.
Lunda and Stellenbosch were evenly matched during the entire encounter. However, the Betway Premiership side enjoyed a bit of possession throughout the 90 minutes, with an average of 56 per cent as compared to 44 per cent of Lunda Sul. Devin Titus scored the winner in the 89th minute.
STELLENBOSCH FC COLLECTS MAXIMUM POINTS IN CONFED CUP
The result saw the Capetonians pick up their first three points in their debut season playing continental football. Stellenbosch qualified to play in the Confed Cup after finishing third in the SA league last campaign.
However, the Cape Winelands side has been struggling in front of goal after finding the back of the net twice. At the back, Stellenbosch has been inconsistent and very shaky after letting in five goals in three outings with only one clean sheet.
Next for coach Steve Barker and Co. in the Confed Cup will be a reverse tie against Lunda Sul. The second leg will be played on Sunday, 5 January 2025, at the Cape Town Stadium. Kickoff time is yet to be confirmed.
