Stubborn Gol Gohar halts Pitso Mosimane’s winning run
Pitso Mosimane and his Esteghlal FC failed to maintain their winning run after dropping points in a lively draw with Gol Gohar on Monday.
The match which ended in a 0-0 stalemate was played at Esteghlal FC’s home, Azadi Stadium in Tehran, Iran.
Mosimane and his men came into this one oozing confidence having been sitting on a good streak.
And they started the match at a high tempo hoping to get an early breakthrough but it was not to be.
What gave them confidence is the fact that their opponents, Gol Gohar were winless in their last five matches.
However, they went to the break deadlocked, with Gol Gohar refusing to be easily cowed into submission.
The visitors, Gol Gohar were very resistant so much so that Esteghlal FC threw the kitchen sink in search of a breakthrough in the second half.
Esteghlal’s DR Congo forward Gael Kakuta was instrumental in leading their attacks but they were thwarted by their opponents.
The draw leaves Mosimane and his men in 10th position with 14 points after 11 matches.
HOW PITSO MOSIMANE AND HIS ESTEGHLAL FARED IN THE LAST GAMES
Last week, Mosimane spearheaded Esteghlal FC into the Hazfi Cup quarter-finals.
That was after a narrow 1-0 win over Mes Kerman in a match that was played at the Shahre Qods Stadium.
Gustavo Blanco was the hero after scoring Esteghlal FC’s priceless goal. Plausibly, the former Bafana Bafana coach has cultivated a fighting spirit as they won even with 10 men.
This is the only time the team has managed to record consecutive wins this season. The 60-year-old has been decent at the helm of the club having helped them avoid defeat in the most recent AFC Champions League matches.
They drew 0-0 with FC Pakhtakor Tashkent before another 2-2 with Saudi Pro League giants Al Ahli.
On the league front, they are slowly hitting good strides having beat Mes Rafsanjan 1-0.
They beat Foolad Khuzestan FC 2-0 away from home. In the last five games, they won three times, scoring six goals and only conceding on two occasions.
All in all, they have managed to keep four clean sheets in six matches across all competitions. This is a marked improvement compared to how they started the season.
