‘I felt robbed’: Gaxa on Chiefs contract dispute

Former Bafana Bafana defender Siboniso Gaxa has revealed how his legal battle with Kaizer Chiefs fuelled his passion for law. The 40-year-old has recently obtained his LLB degree from the University of the Witwatersrand.

The retired footballer took the Soweto giants to the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber after being let go by the club before the start of the 2016/17 season.

Gaxa asserted that he maintained a valid contract with Chiefs then, stating that he was supposed to be compensated regarding a supposedly existing contract.

The ex-Mamelodi Sundowns man emphasised that he had signed a new deal with the Glamour Boys for an additional two years and was entitled to compensation for his premature release.

Nonetheless, the PSL Dispute Resolution Chamber ruled in favour of Chiefs, stating that they discovered no evidence backing the player’s claim that a valid contract remained between him and the club following his release by the Soweto giants in June 2016.

‘STUDYING LAW HAS LIBERATED MY MIND’, SAYS SIBONISO GAXA

Gaxa revealed that his contractual issues with Amakhosi, which he believed were unfair, influenced his choice to study law and how it has freed his mind.

“Studying law has liberated my mind. I have learned so much while doing my LLB by returning to old cases,” ‘Pa Gaxa’, as he is affectionately known, told Radio 2000.

“I was motivated to study law after the dispute that happened at Kaizer Chiefs. So, I felt I was robbed in that case, and I wasn’t happy with the system.

“I had differences with coach Steve Komphela at the time. I questioned how things were done at Chiefs [on the field].”

Gaxa continued: “I couldn’t keep quiet because I didn’t like the direction we were going. That cost me my contract and made the club deny I had signed a new deal.”
