Riveiro’s heartfelt comments about Thembinkosi Lorch’s situation

Orlando Pirates coach Jose Riveiro has shared some heartfelt comments about Thembinkosi Lorch’s situation ahead of their reunion in the Carling Black Label Cup on Saturday. Lorch, a fan favourite, was selected for the Carling All-Stars XI and will be among the substitutes.

The Riveiro-coached Carling All Stars locks horns with Magesi FC, winners of the Carling Knockout Cup, at the Orlando Stadium on Saturday. Kick-off is at 15h30.

The Spanish tactician expressed hope that Lorch would enjoy his return to Orlando and hinted at potentially giving him some playing time. The former Pirates star last featured for Mamelodi Sundowns on October 30th as a substitute in their 3-0 victory over Cape Town City.

Lorch has had a limited impact at Sundowns this season, making six appearances across three competitions. Despite his limited game time, he has contributed a goal and an assist.

Riveiro and Lorch previously worked together at Pirates. However, the 31-year-old’s departure in January 2024 marked the end of their time together at the Soweto giants.

WHAT WERE JOSE RIVEIRO’S HEARTFELT COMMENTS ABOUT THEMBINKOSI LORCH

The Spaniard acknowledged Lorch’s persistent injury and fitness issues at Pirates and Sundowns. He hopes the weekend’s match will allow Lorch to rediscover his joy on the pitch.

“Happy to see him again, he’s an important player in South Africa. He’s been unlucky with injuries, and it’s an opportunity for him to find himself on the field,” Riveiro told journalists.

He added that they would try to make the talented attacker “comfortable again”.

“We’re going to try to make him feel comfortable again, and hopefully, he can enjoy some minutes. Everybody knows the type of player Lorch is. I’m going to be happy if he can have a good time in Orlando again.”

Besides Riveiro, Lorch will reunite with his former teammates Relebohile Mofokeng, Sipho Chaine and Patrick Maswanganyi.
