SA goalkeeper Jethren Barr back in the market

South African overseas-based goalkeeper Jethren Barr is back in the market following his departure from the Irish club Drogheda United FC.

The 29-year-old’s brief stint at Drogheda came to an end after just one season. He had joined the club at the beginning of the year in January after penning a one-year deal.

The man from Pinetown, Durban played eight matches in all competitions, including the League of Ireland Premier Division and Leinster Senior Cup.

He came out with two clean-sheets, conceding 11 goals in the process.

In the early stages of the season, Barr was the second choice in the goalkeeping department. However, midway through the season, he seemed to have claimed the regular place when he played seven matches in a row.

His run was derailed by knee injury which kept him out for some time.

The former Maritzburg United and Bidvest Wits goalkeeper enjoyed a successful end to the season, clinching the FAI Cup with Drogheda in a surprising victory over favourites Derry City.

BARR CONFIRMS DEPARTURE FROM DROGHEDA UNITED

Due to Drogheda’s decision not to offer a contract extension, Barr has moved on to seek opportunities elsewhere.

“I’ve left the team,” he confirmed to FARPost.

In response to the question of a possible return to the Betway Premiership, he stated that he wouldn’t shut the door on South African clubs.

“If something from home did come up I would discuss with my family and see if it’s suitable for us, but I definitely haven’t closed off a return to SA,” he added.

In an interview with this website last year, Barr disclosed that three top-flight and three second-tier clubs in South Africa were interested in his services as he was still unattached.

He turned a blind eye on interest from the Motsepe Foundation Championship and emphasised that he would only consider a move to the Betway Premiership if the offer made sense.

Apart from above-mentioned clubs, Barr has also played for Portadown [Northern Ireland] and Stellenbosch FC.
