Chiefs stars hand All-Stars XI Carling Cup triumph

Kaizer Chiefs’ budding stars were instrumental as the Carling All-Stars emphatically beat Magesi FC 3-0 in a Carling Black Label Cup tie at Orlando Stadium on Saturday afternoon. The All-Stars took an early lead as they successfully retained the Carling Cup trophy under the guidance of cup specialist Jose Riveiro of Orlando Pirates.

Below are the talking points from this fascinating encounter.

KAIZER CHIEFS STARS SHINE FOR ALL-STARS AGAIN

Naledi Hlongwane of Chiefs showed what he’s capable of as he broke the deadlock just 11 minutes into the showpiece. The 18-year-old did not stop there as he completed his brace in the 23rd minute.

For a player who plays in the DStv Diski Challenge [DDC], this will be memorable for him and hopes that he gets recognition from the Amakhosi first-team technical team.

Another Chiefs player who rose through Chiefs development ranks, Samkelo Zwane, found the back of the net in the 21st minute of the contest.

MAGESI FC NOT CLINICAL

Magesi displayed no indications of troubling All-Stars as they had against Mamelodi Sundowns in the Carling Knockout Cup final. The Limpopo team lacked precision in scoring.

The All-Stars appeared to be the more impressive team on the day, while the Clinton Larsen-coached side occasionally surrendered possession unnecessarily.

Magesi required a touch of magic to stir things up and seize control of the match, but it was never meant to be.

PAST WINNING COACHES

Here are the eleven coaches that have won the tournament since its launch in 2011.

The 11 coaches are Julio Leal [Orlando Pirates, 2011], Augusto Palacios [Orlando Pirates, 2012], Stuart Baxter [Kaizer Chiefs, 2013 and 2021], Eric Tinkler [Orlando Pirates, 2014 and 2015], Steve Komphela [Kaizer Chiefs, 2016 and 2017], Milutin Sredojevic [Orlando Pirates, 2019], Rulani Mokwena [Mamelodi Sundowns, 2022] and Jose Riveiro [ Carling All-Stars, 2023 and 2024].

THE PRIZE MONEY FOR THE CARLING CUP

The Carling Cup champions will walk away with R2 million, while the runners-up will pocket R1 million.
