‘They have similarities’: Zungu on Sundowns & AmaZulu
AmaZulu FC newly-signed midfielder Bongani Zungu has highlighted the similarities between his former club, Mamelodi Sundowns and Usuthu.
‘Ben 10’, as he’s affectionately known, joined the Durban-based club as a free agent having departed the Brazilians at the end of the previous season.
Zungu spent nearly six months without a club. At some point, he was close to signing with Wydad Casablanca, but the Moroccan club reportedly decided against offering him a contract due to fitness concerns.
The 32-year-old is impressed by the “modern football” being played by AmaZulu under the guidance of Arthur Zwane and Vusumuzi Vilakazi. He sees similarities between their style and that of his former club, Sundowns.
Coincidentally, Zungu’s first match for AmaZulu will be against Masandawana, although it’s unlikely he’ll play.
The two sides face off on Tuesday, 24 December at Moses Mabhida Stadium at 3 PM.
He added that while it will be a fascinating match, he stated it will be an “emotional game” for him.
ZUNGU DRAWS PARALLELS BETWEEN AMAZULU & MAMELODI SUNDOWNS
“I know sundowns very well. I’ve got a lot of friends there. It’s a club that I’ve played for many years. Obviously, the team has been doing well,” said Zungu.
“Before I even signed here, I watched a lot of games. What the guys are doing and the football they’re playing. I feel like it’s going to be a very fascinating game.
“From my own perspective, both teams have similarities. They play what you call modern football. It’s going to be a nice game.
“Obviously, we have to apply ourselves. We have to want it more. If you want it more and you’re more hungry on the day, you can match Sundowns.
“I think it’s going to be a very good game. It’s an emotional game for me. But as I just mentioned, I trust the team and the coaches.
“The way the team has been playing, everyone is calm. It’s a game that I feel is going to be a good watch for everyone. You know where AmaZulu are right now.”
