Sandile Mthethwa singles out his best moment at Pirates
Following his exit from Orlando Pirates, defender Sandile Mthethwa has reflected on his best moment with the Soweto giants.
Mthethwa parted ways with Pirates over a week ago to search for regular playing time elsewhere. The talented centre-back has already found a new home after signing with AmaZulu FC a few days after leaving Pirates.
In an announcement that was made last week, Usuthu confirmed the arrival of Mthethwa and Bongani Zungu, who is also signing on a free transfer. The central midfielder has been a free agent since his exit from Mamelodi Sundowns at the end of the 2023/24 Betway Premiership season.
Meanwhile, Mthethwa’s unexpected departure from the Sea Robbers came as a big shock as he was seemingly on the plans of the team after forming an integral part of the squad in the past two seasons.
In the current campaign, the 27-year-old defender struggled for game-time after failing to register any appearance for Pirates in all competitions. Mthethwa featured in 21 games in his time with the Buccaneers.
Pirates head coach Jose Riveiro has preferred Thabiso Sesane, Nkosinathi Sibisi, and Innocent Maela to share the responsibilities in the centre-back position.
MTHETHWA REVEALS THAT WINNING THE 2022 NEDBANK CUP IS HIS BEST MOMENT AT ORLANDO PIRATES
Speaking for the first time with the media since joining AmaZulu, Mthethwa revealed that his best moment in Pirates colours was helping the club win the 2022 Nedbank Cup title.
In the same competition, the KZN-born defender scored the winning goal in the extra-time against arch-rival Kaizer Chiefs in the semi-final.
“I think the biggest moment with Pirates was winning the [2022] Nedbank Cup; most people would say that the goal against Kaizer Chiefs is the best memory for me because if we didn’t win that cup, I wouldn’t mean anything,” Mthethwa said.
“So I think that was the first cup that I won with Pirates that I contributed to. I have won the MTN8 before, but that cup [Nedbank] means a lot to me.
“Winning the Nedbank Cup is something I’ll always take with from Pirates. At least I gave something to Pirates; I know it was not only me; the guys played a big role in every match we played in the Nedbank Cup, but I also had a hand in winning that trophy.”
